Short answer: the best AI photo editors in 2026 are Canva if you want a free all-rounder that also does design (Pro is $18 a month), Pixfy if you want to change a photo by typing one sentence, Adobe Photoshop if you need exact, layer-level control ($22.99 a month), Blend for product and on-model shots for an online store, and ImageToLayers for turning a flat image into an editable layered PSD. Picsart and Fotor are the cheapest ways into big models such as Nano Banana Pro. Updated November 3, 2026.
How we checked: plans, free allowances and prices come from each vendor's own pricing and help pages, read November 3, 2026. We did not edit the same photo in every tool, so this guide compares plans, prices and features, not output quality. Per-image costs are our arithmetic on the vendors' own figures. Prices are in US dollars.
"ai photo editor" gets about 201,000 US Google searches a month, and "free ai photo editor" about 27,100 (Google Ads data, which ends in September 2026). The newer tools are growing fast: in Stork's pull of estimated Google search traffic from DataForSEO (November 2, 2026; an estimate of search visits, not users), Blend rose from about 17,000 a month in July to about 125,000 in October, FreePixel from about 18,000 to about 59,000, and ImageToLayers from under 100 to about 4,400.

| Blend | Product and on-model shots | Yes, limits not published | PRO $14.99/mo or $89.99/yr | No API listed |

Same model, different price
Several of these editors resell the same Google model, Nano Banana Pro, and say how many images a plan buys. That makes one rare like-for-like comparison possible.
| Tool and plan | Nano Banana Pro images | About $ per image |
|---|---|---|
| Picsart Pro, billed yearly ($10.50/mo) | about 100 a month | $0.11 |
| Pixfy Creator, billed yearly ($150/yr) | 6 credits each, 300 credits a month | $0.25 |
| Fotor Pro, billed yearly ($47.99/yr) | about 6 a month | $0.67 |
| Fotor Pro, monthly ($10.99) | about 6 a month | $1.83 |
If you mostly run heavy model edits, Picsart's credits go furthest. Fotor's low yearly price buys fewer of them; it is better value for its everyday tools than for premium models.
1. Canva: the free all-rounder
Canva is a design tool first, which is why it suits people who edit a photo and then put it into a post, a flyer or a slide. The Free plan includes the editor, 1.6 million templates, 4.7 million stock assets, 5 GB of storage, limited access to Canva's Standard and Premium AI, and a trial of its new Magic Layers. Pro, at $18 a month or $144 a year, adds the AI tools Canva lists by name (resize, translate, remove background and more), 10 times the Free plan's AI allowance and 141 million premium assets. Business is $25 a month or $250 a year per person with 20 times the allowance. All AI tools draw on one shared monthly allowance, and heavier tasks use more of it.
2. Pixfy: edit a photo with a sentence
Pixfy does one thing: upload a photo, type one change ("replace the sky with a sunset, keep the house") and a model redraws that part. It names its models openly: Nano Banana, GPT Image 2.5, Seedream and FLUX, with Seedream 5.0 Flash as the default. New accounts outside China, India and Russia get 9 free credits, enough for 9 edits on the 1-credit models, with half-resolution downloads and no watermark. Creator is $12.50 a month billed yearly ($150) for 300 credits; credits come back if an edit fails. Pixfy itself warns that small text can shift and fine detail can soften, because every edit is a redraw.
3. Adobe Photoshop: precise control, few AI credits
Adobe Photoshop is still the tool for layer-level, pixel-exact work, with Generative Fill on top. The Photoshop plan is $22.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly, or $263.88 a year prepaid, with a 7-day free trial, but it includes only 25 generative credits a month. Two other plans are better for AI-heavy work: Firefly Pro at $19.99 a month gives Photoshop on web and mobile plus 4,000 credits, and the Photography plan at $19.99 a month adds Lightroom with 1,000 credits. There is no free Photoshop plan on Adobe's plans page; Adobe points free users to Adobe Express. See Firefly for Adobe's own image model.
4. Blend: product photos for online sellers
Blend turns a phone photo of a product into studio shots, lifestyle scenes, on-model photos, ghost mannequin shots and short product videos. PRO is $14.99 a month or $89.99 a year (about $7.50 a month) for 1,000 credits, including 2,000 AI backgrounds and 100 each of model, lifestyle, studio and ghost mannequin shots a month. You can start free, but Blend does not publish the free limits, and a 2023 reviewer mentioned a watermark on free exports. It runs in the browser and on iOS and Android, has no API listed and does not name its AI models.
5. ImageToLayers: a flat image into a layered PSD
ImageToLayers splits a flattened JPG, PNG or WebP into separate layers and rebuilds the areas hidden behind objects, then exports a PSD, PNG layers or a ZIP. It says plainly that the result is a new layered interpretation, not your original layers. A free Starter Trial gives 20 one-time credits for its background tools plus a layered preview, but not layer export. Creator is $19 a month, or $10 a month billed yearly ($120 for 12,000 credits a year); Studio adds an API. There is a Photoshop plugin. Fotor also lists a new Image to Layer tool, so compare both if this is your main job.
6. Picsart: the most model images per dollar
Picsart now leads its pricing page with AI image and video generation on models such as Nano Banana Pro, Seedance, MiniMax H3 and Kling. Pro is $10.50 a month billed yearly against a $15 list price, for 500 credits a month, which Picsart sizes at about 100 Nano Banana Pro generations or about 125 seconds of Seedance 2.5 video. Ultra is $60 a month billed yearly for 2,500 credits. The pricing page did not describe a free plan or show a monthly price when we read it.

7. Fotor: the lowest yearly entry price
Fotor packs dozens of one-click tools (enhancer, background and object remover, retouching, colorize, upscaler, AI headshots) plus image and video models. Basic is free forever with limited free credits, one generation at a time and 512 MB of storage. Pro is $10.99 a month, or $47.99 a year (about $3.99 a month), for 100 credits a month, which Fotor sizes at about 6 Nano Banana Pro images. Pro+ ($23.99 a month, 300 credits) adds batch background removal and replacement. The yearly Pro plan is the cheapest paid entry here; buy it for the everyday tools, not for premium model credits.
8. FreePixel: stock photos with AI cutouts
FreePixel is a stock library first (photos, vectors, 3D, mockups) with AI tools on top: image generator, background remover and generator, product backgrounds, mockups and face or cloth swap. FreePixel's help site lists a free plan with 250 downloads a month and 5 AI credits a day, for personal use with attribution, and Basic at $6 a month for 500 credits with commercial use. Most tools cost 1 credit, so a background removal is about 1.2 cents on Basic. Its own pages give different free allowances, so check at checkout.
Related: fonts and anime art
Two tools from the same research are not photo editors but often come up alongside them. YoFont turns a prompt, an image of lettering or your handwriting into a real installable font (TTF, OTF, WOFF); commercial use starts on Pro at $19 a month. Elser AI is an anime studio for characters, comics and anime video on resold models such as Veo, Sora and Midjourney; its paid plans are billed for 12 months and its terms grant it a perpetual license to your inputs and outputs. How to choose an AI photo editor
- You want free and also make social posts or flyers: Canva Free; upgrade to Pro for the background remover.
- You want to fix one photo by describing the change: Pixfy's free credits are enough to judge it.
- You need exact masks, layers and print work: Adobe Photoshop, or Firefly Pro if you mostly use generative tools.
- You sell products online: Blend for on-model and mannequin shots; FreePixel if you mainly need cutouts and stock.
- You lost the source file of a design: ImageToLayers to rebuild it as layers.
- You run many premium-model edits on a budget: Picsart Pro, billed yearly.
Whichever you pick, check two things before you pay: whether the free plan allows commercial use, and whether credits reset each month. Free downloads on Pixfy are half resolution, FreePixel's free use needs attribution, and most subscription credits here do not roll over.

How much does Photoshop cost in 2026?
The Photoshop plan is $22.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly, or $263.88 a year prepaid, with 25 generative credits a month and a 7-day trial. Firefly Pro ($19.99 a month) includes Photoshop on web and mobile with 4,000 credits. Checked on Adobe's plans page November 3, 2026.
Is Canva's AI photo editor free?
Partly. Canva Free includes the editor and limited access to its Standard and Premium AI tools. The background remover and a 10 times larger AI allowance come with Pro at $18 a month or $144 a year.
Which AI photo editor is best for product photos?
Blend is built for online sellers: studio and lifestyle shots, AI models and ghost mannequins, with PRO at $14.99 a month or $89.99 a year. FreePixel is cheaper ($6 a month) if you mainly need cutouts and product backgrounds.
Can AI split a photo into layers?
Yes. ImageToLayers separates a flat image into layers, rebuilds hidden areas and exports a PSD, from $10 a month billed yearly. The layers are an AI reinterpretation, not your original file's layers, so fine detail may need cleanup.
