What is llms.txt?
A proposed convention (llmstxt.org, Jeremy Howard, September 2024) for a markdown file at /llms.txt that gives language models a curated, token-efficient map of your site: an H1 with the site name, a one-line summary in a blockquote, and H2 sections listing your key pages as markdown links with short notes.
Does Google use llms.txt?
No. Google's John Mueller has said no major AI service has announced using it and compared it to the keywords meta tag. Publishing one won't help Google rankings. It's a low-cost courtesy for LLM-based tools and agents that do read it — a few minutes of work, not a growth strategy.
Then why publish one at all?
Because it costs almost nothing and some developer-facing tools, agents and answer engines do fetch it. It's also a useful editorial exercise: deciding which ten pages best explain your product is worth doing even if no crawler ever reads the file. Just keep expectations calibrated: the measurable wins in AI visibility are crawler access, server-rendered text and structured data.
Where do I put the file?
At the root of your domain: https://yoursite.com/llms.txt. Most frameworks serve it from the public/ or static/ directory. Keep it plain UTF-8 markdown.
What's the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?
llms.txt is the curated index — links with notes. Some sites also publish an expanded variant (often llms-full.txt) that inlines the full content of the linked pages for models that want everything in one request. Start with llms.txt; add a full variant only if something you use actually consumes it.
