Where to submit your AI tool — measured, not copy-pasted

Every “best AI directories” listicle recycles the same untested roster — some of it dead, some of it quietly gone paid-only. We did it the hard way: submitted a real product to the open ones, read every confirmation email, and measured the rest from primary sources.

Four numbers per directory, none of them marketing: authority (Ahrefs Domain Rating), traffic rank (Tranco top-1M — aggregated real-traffic data, not an SEO tool’s estimate), listings (URLs in the directory’s own public sitemap), and dead listings — the share of a 30-listing sample whose product site no longer resolves or is a parked domain. Read DR and traffic rank together: a high DR with no measurable traffic is what a manufactured backlink profile looks like — several directories on this list require every listed tool to link back to them, which pumps DR without a single extra visitor.

Do “dofollow” directory backlinks exist? We read the HTML.

Directory submission is sold almost entirely on one promise: a dofollow backlink. Nobody checks it. So we did — fetched sample listing pages from the directories making the claim and read the rel attribute on the outbound product link. Two of the six advertise dofollow and serve rel=“nofollow” — you pay or badge-swap for a link that passes nothing.

Only directories whose listing pages we could fetch and parse appear here. The rest of the 27 either block automated access or publish no per-tool listing page to check.

What the table can’t show

• Bot walls. Five of the twenty-seven block access to their own sitemaps or entire site (Cloudflare), and two more (Twelve Tools, Wired Business) serve a sitemap with no crawlable tool listings in it — all unfriendly to the AI agents that increasingly do the discovering.
• Cloaked outbound links. Some directories route every outbound click through internal redirects, so the “backlink” you came for is invisible to crawlers regardless of what the pricing page promises.
• The post-submit upsell. Several free tiers reveal their real terms only after you’ve submitted — a months-long queue with a paid skip. Our full teardown with the submission-by-submission receipts names each catch.

One more thing the listing counts above should make you ask: bigger isn’t better. Like Google, Stork is aware of far more tools than it lists — listing is a quality bar, not a crawl. A directory that indexes everything it finds is a graveyard with good SEO.

Domain Rating from Ahrefs’ public endpoint. Traffic rank from the Tranco top-1M list (a research-grade aggregate of multiple traffic datasets; “outside top 1M” means the domain doesn’t appear at all); the originally-audited set was also cross-checked against Google CrUX real-user data. A high DR with no Tranco presence is what a manufactured backlink profile looks like — links without visitors. Listing counts are URLs in each directory’s dominant tool-page sitemap segment, fetched from their public sitemaps. Dead-listing ratio: 30 listings sampled evenly across that segment; each listing’s outbound product link resolved and probed — “dead” means the product domain no longer responds or 404s, “parked” means it serves a domain-parking page. Pricing and tier terms re-checked on each directory’s public pages in August 2026; narrative claims about post-submit behavior come from our May 2026 live submission run with a real product. Seven directories were added in the July refresh on measurement alone — no live submission — and for those we also fetched sample listing pages and read the rel attributes on outbound links: “dofollow” is stated as fact only where we saw a followed link in the HTML, and where a directory’s advertised dofollow turned out to be nofollow, the table says that too. Where a directory blocks its own sitemap or gates pricing behind a login, the table says so rather than guessing. Stork does not appear in the measured table because we won’t audit ourselves with a straight face and call it independent — our terms are stated above instead.
