ElevenLabs Voice Changer 2026: How to Use It, Cost and Rules

Short answer: ElevenLabs Voice Changer takes a recording of you (uploaded or recorded in the browser) and re-voices it as one of more than 10,000 library voices or your own clone, keeping your timing, emotion and accent. It costs 1,000 credits per minute in the app, which is about 10 minutes a month on the Free plan and about 30 on Starter ($6), or $0.12 a minute through the API. Each clip can be up to 5 minutes long.

Voice Changer was called Speech to Speech until recently, and the API still uses that name. Instead of typing text, you perform the line yourself. ElevenLabs keeps the performance (pacing, emphasis, sighs, laughs, whispers, cries) and swaps the voice. That makes it the tool to reach for when text to speech will not read a line the way you hear it in your head.

• Fix a text-to-speech take: record the line with the right emphasis or pronunciation and convert it into the same voice.
• Character voices: one voice actor can perform several characters, including across genders.
• Consistent narration: keep one voice across recording sessions and languages.
• Patch a recording: replace specific words or phrases in an existing take.

One thing surprises people: the output keeps the accent and language of your recording. ElevenLabs' own example is that if you pick a British voice but speak with an American accent, you get that voice with an American accent. Voice Changer does not translate; for that, use ElevenLabs dubbing.

• 1. Open Voice Changer. Sign in to ElevenLabs and choose Voice Changer in the sidebar of the ElevenCreative app.
• 2. Add your audio. Drag in a file or click the audio box to upload. To record live, press Record Audio, then the microphone button, then Stop. The file must be under 50 MB and the audio no longer than 5 minutes. Recording is free; you only pay when you generate.
• 3. Pick the target voice. Choose from the Voice Library or select a voice you cloned or designed.
• 4. Adjust settings. Voice Changer uses the same voice settings as text to speech, plus a Remove Background Noise switch. Turn it on if the room was noisy.
• 5. Check the cost and generate. The credit cost appears in the bottom-left corner before you press Generate.
• 6. Download or reuse. Download right away with the button at the bottom right, or later from the History tab, as MP3 or WAV. You can also import the result into Studio for longer projects.

ElevenLabs' recording tips: perform expressively, because the model copies what you give it; set microphone gain so the take is neither too quiet nor clipping; and split anything over 5 minutes into sections.

Using the Voice Changer API

Developers create an API key in the dashboard, install the Python (pip install elevenlabs) or JavaScript (npm install @elevenlabs/elevenlabs-js) SDK, and call the speech-to-speech convert method with a voice_id, the audio file, model_id="eleven_multilingual_sts_v2" and an output format such as mp3_44100_128. Credits come from one shared monthly pool, so minutes spent on Voice Changer are minutes you cannot spend on text to speech. Paid-plan credits roll over for up to two months. Through the API, Voice Changer is billed at $0.12 per minute on every plan. When we checked, the feature pages also showed a $1 first month for Starter and $11 for Creator, but promotions change. • Free: fine for testing. Output is for non-commercial use only and must credit ElevenLabs when shared.
• Starter ($6): the cheapest plan with a commercial license, and the first with Instant Voice Cloning, so you can convert into a clone of your own voice.
• Creator ($22): adds a Professional Voice Clone slot and about 121 minutes a month, the sensible tier for regular YouTube or podcast work.
• Pro ($99) and up: for heavy monthly volume or more simultaneous conversions.

• Length: 5 minutes (300 seconds) per conversion, the same on every plan.
• File size: under 50 MB. ElevenLabs suggests converting large files to MP3.
• Formats: MP3, M4A, FLAC, OGA, OGG and WAV audio; MKV, WEBM, MP4 and MOV video.
• Languages: 29 on the multilingual model, per the docs (the marketing page also mentions 70+; we use the documented figure). The English model is English-only.
• No translation: the output keeps your language and accent.

ElevenLabs' prohibited use policy applies to every voice you convert into. In short:

• You may not clone, synthesize or impersonate the voice, identity or likeness of any living person without their explicit and informed consent or other valid authorization.
• Using a deceased person's voice is barred where it is reasonably likely to cause harm.
• Impersonating political candidates or elected officials is prohibited, and so is falsely implying endorsement or affiliation.
• You may not submit voice recordings of anyone under 18 to create or train a voice model.
• Fraud, scams and non-consensual intimate content are banned outright.
