ElevenLabs Sound Effects 2026: Prompts, Limits, Credits and Rights

TL;DR / Key Takeaways

  • Describe a sound in up to 450 characters and ElevenLabs returns four variations, each up to 30 seconds.
  • A generation costs about 200 credits, so Free covers about 50 a month, Starter 150, Creator 605 and Pro 3,000.
  • If you set a fixed duration, the docs price it at 40 credits per second.
  • The API charges $0.12 per minute of sound; the new SFX v3 model is available there and in the app.
  • Free-plan sounds are personal use only; paid plans can use them commercially, royalty-free.

Short answer: ElevenLabs Sound Effects generates royalty-free sounds from a text prompt: you describe the sound, it returns four variations, each up to 30 seconds, and you can make them loop. A generation costs about 200 credits, which is about 50 a month on the Free plan and 150 on Starter ($6). Through the API it costs $0.12 per minute. Free output is personal use only; any paid plan can use it commercially.

How we checked: details come from the ElevenLabs Sound Effects page, the capability overview, the product guide, the API reference and the pricing and API pricing pages, all checked on elevenlabs.io on November 1, 2026. How ElevenLabs Sound Effects works

  • 1. Sign in to ElevenLabs and open Sound Effects in the ElevenCreative app sidebar.
  • 2. Type a description of the sound, up to 450 characters, for example "person walking on grass".
  • 3. Set the duration or leave it on auto, turn Looping on if you need a seamless loop, and set prompt influence (30% by default; higher follows your words more literally, lower adds variation).
  • 4. Click generate. You get four sound effects each time.
  • 5. Find them in the History tab and download as MP3 (44.1 kHz) or WAV (48 kHz), or star them to keep in Favorites.

Sounds you like can be shared to the Explore library, and the SB1 soundboard lets you build custom collections of buttons for streams or Discord.

If the four results are close but not right, ElevenLabs suggests you either upscale the one you like most or keep generating with a tweaked prompt. Each new generation spends credits again, so small, deliberate prompt changes are cheaper than starting over with a completely different description.

Sound Effects vs Eleven Music

Both tools can make musical audio, so it helps to know where the line sits. Sound Effects is built for short clips: one-shots, Foley, ambiences, risers and loops of up to 30 seconds, including drum loops or a synth pad. If you need a full track with structure, lyrics or vocals, ElevenLabs points you to Eleven Music, which runs up to 5 minutes and has its own licensing terms. Our ElevenLabs music guide covers those.

Prompt tips from ElevenLabs

The model understands plain language and audio vocabulary. ElevenLabs' guidance boils down to this:

  • Simple effects, clear words: "Glass shattering on concrete", "Heavy wooden door creaking open", "Thunder rumbling in the distance".
  • Add a little detail: "high-quality, professionally recorded footsteps on grass, sound effects foley" tends to beat a bare "footsteps".
  • Sequences: "Footsteps on gravel, then a metallic door opens" works, but for the best results ElevenLabs suggests generating each sound separately and combining them in an editor.
  • Musical parts: "90s hip-hop drum loop, 90 BPM" or "Vintage brass stabs in F minor".
  • Use sound-design terms: impact, whoosh, ambience, one-shot, loop, stem, braam, glitch, drone.
  • For SFX v3, describe the scene: action, setting, atmosphere and performance, such as "Rain against a window in a quiet apartment". ElevenLabs notes that exact repeat counts ("triangle hit 4 times") are not always followed, and that wording matters.

Length limits

  • Maximum: 30 seconds per generation, on every plan.
  • Minimum: the API reference accepts durations from 0.5 seconds (the overview page says 0.1).
  • Longer sounds: use Looping and repeat the clip, for example 30 seconds of rain looped under a scene.
  • Formats: MP3 for everything; WAV at 48 kHz for non-looping effects, and only on paid plans.
  • Prompt length: 450 characters in the app.

Sound effects allowances from elevenlabs.io/sound-effects, checked on elevenlabs.io on November 1, 2026. Scale and Business follow the same rate of about 200 credits per generation.

Two credit numbers appear in ElevenLabs' material. The pricing page lists about 200 credits per generation, which is what the plan table above is built on. The developer overview adds that when you specify a duration, the cost is 40 credits per second, so a fixed 30-second request is priced on length. The app shows the exact cost before you generate, and the prompt text itself never changes the price.

Through the API, sound effects are billed at $0.12 per minute of generated audio on every plan. The endpoint takes text, optional duration_seconds (0.5 to 30), loop, prompt_influence (0 to 1, default 0.3) and model_id, either eleven_text_to_sound_v2 (the default) or eleven_text_to_sound_v3. Commercial use by plan

ElevenLabs' own FAQ is direct: with a paid account you can use its sound effects royalty-free in commercial projects, including YouTube videos, social media content and advertising. Free users may only use the service for non-commercial purposes. The sound effects page lists Free as "Personal use only".

  • Free: personal projects only, MP3 downloads.
  • Starter ($6) and up: commercial, royalty-free, with WAV downloads.
  • Everyone: you may not sell or license the tools themselves or use the output to build competing products, per ElevenLabs' terms.

Because credits are shared across products, 150 sound effects on Starter would use the whole month's pool. Creators mixing voiceover and sound design usually find Creator ($22) the more comfortable tier. Plan-by-plan detail is in our ElevenLabs pricing guide.

Who it suits

  • Video editors and YouTubers who need a specific sound that a stock library does not have.
  • Indie game developers generating one-shots, ambiences and UI sounds through the API.
  • Podcasters and audiobook producers adding Foley and atmosphere, especially in ElevenLabs Studio, where SFX v3 is also available.
  • Streamers building soundboards.

Frequently asked questions

Are ElevenLabs sound effects free?

You can generate them on the Free plan, which ElevenLabs lists at about 50 generations a month, but free output is personal, non-commercial use only. Commercial use starts on Starter at $6 a month.

How long can an ElevenLabs sound effect be?

Up to 30 seconds per generation. For longer ambience, turn on Looping and repeat the clip; looped sounds are designed to play on repeat without an audible start or end.

How many credits does a sound effect cost?

ElevenLabs' pricing page lists about 200 credits per generation. The docs add that when you set an exact duration, the cost is 40 credits per second. The text of the prompt does not change the price.

Can I use ElevenLabs sound effects on YouTube?

Yes on a paid plan. ElevenLabs says paid users can use its sound effects royalty-free in commercial projects including YouTube videos, social media and advertising. Free users may only use them non-commercially.

What is ElevenLabs SFX v3?

SFX v3 is the newest sound effects model, launched in late October 2026. ElevenLabs says it follows multi-part prompts more closely, handles vocal and musical sounds better and is less likely to clip on high-pitched sounds. In the API use model_id eleven_text_to_sound_v3.

Can ElevenLabs generate music with sound effects?

It can make musical elements such as drum loops, bass lines and synth pads. For full songs ElevenLabs points you to Eleven Music instead.
