Short answer: the best AI homework helpers in 2026 are Gauth for the most generous free tier across all subjects, Mathos AI for students who want to learn math through hints and video ($46.80 a year), UpStudy for the cheapest yearly plan on the web (about $40 a year), and Numerade for video walkthroughs recorded by educators ($95.90 a year). Solvely and StudyX bundle exam prep and notes. Students in Turkey and India should look at Sorumatik and YoLearn.AI. Whichever you pick, avoid the weekly plan, cancel trials before they bill, and check the answer yourself: none of these apps says it verifies its final answers. Updated November 3, 2026.
How we checked: plans, prices and limits come from each vendor's own pricing and terms pages and, where the website shows no price, from the vendor's own US App Store listing, read November 3, 2026. Prices are in US dollars unless noted. We did not test these apps on real homework, so this guide compares plans, prices and features, not answer quality.
The trap is the billing, not the price
The yearly plans in this category are cheap: about $40 to $100 a year. The money is made elsewhere. Weekly plans are the default upsell, and over a year they cost five to seven times as much as the annual plan. Free trials convert to paid plans automatically, and several vendors' terms say payments are non-refundable.
| App | Weekly or monthly plan, over a year | Yearly plan | Refund terms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solvely | $8.99/week = about $467 | $67.99 | Non-refundable, per the terms |
| Mathos AI | $5.98/week list = about $311 | $46.80 | Limited refunds, e.g. a first purchase with no usage |
| Numerade | $29.95/month = $359.40 | $95.90 | Non-refundable after the 7-day trial |
| StudyX | $9.99/month = $119.88 | $69.99 | Plans page promises 3-day money-back; terms say non-refundable |
App prices also differ from website prices. UpStudy, Solvely and StudyX all list different amounts in the App Store than on the web, where the vendor avoids the store's fee. If you subscribe in an app, you cancel in your Apple or Google account, not on the website.

None of them says it checks its answers
Wrong answers delivered with confident steps are the top complaint in this category, from Gauth's Trustpilot page to the reviews of smaller apps. No vendor here says it verifies its final answers with a math engine. The closest is Solvely, which says answers are "cross-checked across multiple top AI models"; agreement between models is not the same as a checked answer. Before you hand in or study from an AI solution, plug the answer back into the original problem, or check it in a symbolic tool such as Wolfram|Alpha or Symbolab.
Gauth: best free tier across subjects
Gauth (formerly Gauthmath) solves a photo, screenshot or typed question with step-by-step notes, across math, sciences, economics, literature and writing, and can route hard questions to human tutors. It is the biggest app here: 100M+ Google Play installs, and estimated Google search traffic of about 2.9 million visits a month in July 2026 and 3.8 million in October. The web plans page shows a free plan and a 3-day Plus trial but no price; the App Store listing lists Plus at $11.99 a month, $31.99 a quarter or $99.99 a year. The free limit is not published, and Trustpilot reviewers (2.3 from 86) complain about ads before answers. Parents may want to know that Gauth's US terms name TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC as the operator for US users.
Mathos AI: best for learning math
Mathos AI solves typed, photographed, PDF or spoken math problems step by step, with a hint mode instead of the full answer, a whiteboard tutor that points out mistakes as you work, and animated video walkthroughs. On its pricing page, the free plan needs no card and includes 6 video minutes a day. Basic is $46.80 a year, but the page opens on weekly billing: $5.98 a week struck through to $2.99, without saying how long the lower price lasts. Prime is $98.80 a year. Paid plans start with a 3-day trial. It runs in the browser and on Android.
UpStudy: cheapest yearly plan
UpStudy (formerly CameraMath) is a photo solver for math and other subjects with live tutors, PDF chat, SAT, AP and ACT practice and a Chrome extension. Its Premium page lists $11.99 a month, or $3.33 a month billed yearly, which works out to about $40 a year, the lowest annual price we found. The free plan is "limited" without a published number, and the App Store lists different prices, including a $6.99 weekly option. Estimated search traffic went from almost nothing in July to about 52,000 visits a month in October.
Numerade: best for video walkthroughs
Numerade is built on a library of more than 200 million educator-recorded video solutions organised by textbook and problem, plus custom video answers and an AI tutor called Ace. Free accounts get one unlock a day. Per its homepage, paid plans are $29.95 a month or $95.90 a year after a 7-day trial, and a $3 Day Pass has no recurring charge. Its refund policy says payments after the trial are non-refundable. If you only need help for one night, the Day Pass is the safe choice.
Solvely: homework plus exam prep
Solvely solves from photos, PDFs or text and adds mock exams, study guides from slides or YouTube links, and lecture transcription. Its pricing page offers Pro at $3.99 for the first week then $8.99 a week, $12.99 a month, or $67.99 a year. The free plan is 2 solves, so it is a trial, not a free tier. Its terms say fees are non-refundable and trials convert unless cancelled. Paid plans also include writing tools aimed at getting text past AI detectors; schools may treat their use as misconduct.

StudyX: homework, notes and transcription on credits
StudyX covers homework help across 50+ subjects, note taking, lecture transcription, flashcards and quizzes, and runs on the web, mobile, a browser extension and Discord. Its plans page lists Plus at $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year for 3,000 credits a month plus 30 a day, Pro at $19.99 or $106.99, and Max at $99.99 or $718.99. StudyX does not publish how many credits a question costs, so you cannot tell how many questions a plan buys, and its money-back promise conflicts with terms that say payments are non-refundable.
Regional picks: Turkey and India
Sorumatik, for Turkish exams
Sorumatik is a Turkish homework forum where an AI account answers each question with the formula, numbered steps, the answer and an exam tip, organised by YKS, LGS, KPSS and school level. Asking on the website is free. The app adds photo solving and a narrated "AI Blackboard"; the App Store listing sells Premium at $4.99 a week or $79.99 a year, and what Premium unlocks is not explained on the website. Estimated search traffic rose from about 235,000 visits a month in July to about 1.5 million in October.
YoLearn.AI, for CBSE, JEE and NEET
YoLearn.AI is a voice and chat tutor with a sketchpad, built for the Indian syllabus in seven languages. Sign-up gives 20 tokens. On its pricing page, Starter is free for the first month and then auto-pays Rs 500 a month for 500 tokens; Pro is Rs 1,000 and Elite Rs 2,000. Tokens per question are not published, so try the free tokens before the Starter month begins.
How to choose
- You want free help in any subject: Gauth, and check its answers.
- You want to learn math, not just get answers: Mathos AI hint mode, or Khanmigo, which is built around hints.
- You want the lowest yearly price: UpStudy on the website.
- You learn best by watching a teacher work the problem: Numerade, or its Day Pass for one night.
- You want exam prep and lecture notes in the same app: Solvely or StudyX, on the yearly plan.
- Whatever you choose: pay yearly or not at all, put the trial end date in your calendar, and verify the final answer.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free AI homework helper?
Gauth has the most usable free tier across subjects, though its daily limit is not published and reviewers complain about ads. Mathos AI is free without a card for math, Numerade gives one free unlock a day, and Sorumatik's Turkish web forum is fully free.
Are AI homework helper answers accurate?
Not reliably. Wrong answers with confident steps are the most common complaint in this category, and none of the apps we checked says it verifies its final answers with a math engine. Plug the answer back into the problem or check it in a symbolic tool such as Wolfram|Alpha.
Why are homework apps billed weekly?
Weekly plans look cheap per payment but cost far more over time. Solvely at $8.99 a week is about $467 a year against $67.99 on its yearly plan, and Mathos AI's $5.98 weekly list price is about $311 a year against $46.80.
How do I avoid being charged after a free trial?
Cancel before the trial ends, in the same place you subscribed: your Apple or Google account for in-app purchases, or the vendor's billing page on the web. Numerade's and Solvely's terms say payments after a trial are non-refundable, so a reminder for the day before is worth setting.
What is the cheapest AI homework helper?
Of the plans we checked, UpStudy Premium billed yearly on its website is cheapest at $3.33 a month, about $40 a year. Mathos AI Basic is $46.80 a year. Numerade's $3 Day Pass is the cheapest way to get one night of help with no subscription.
Is using an AI homework helper cheating?
It depends on your school's rules and how you use it. Using hints and step explanations to understand a problem is usually fine; copying answers into graded work usually is not. Some apps also sell tools to get writing past AI detectors, which schools may treat as misconduct.
