Doubao Review

Doubao is a general AI assistant for Chinese-speaking users, run by Beijing Chuntian Zhiyun Technology and its affiliates, the company named in Doubao's terms; news coverage such as AFP's report on the paid launch describes it as ByteDance's chatbot. On the web, phone and desktop it answers questions with web search, explains homework, summarises files, writes code, and generates documents, spreadsheets and slides. Doubao's App Store listing also highlights voice input and voice calls, photo recognition, a "P-tu" image editor driven by plain-language instructions, and image and video generation on ByteDance's Seedance models; the desktop download page names Seedream 5.0 for images and Seedance 2.5 for video in the paid professional versions.

The newer work mode turns it from a question-answering assistant into an agent: in the desktop app it can operate a virtual desktop and browser to carry out multi-step tasks while you keep using your computer, and you can watch, pause or take over at any point. It also edits a selected spot in a document, slide deck or web page, runs scheduled tasks, and connects to Feishu (Lark) to work from company meeting notes and chats. Files Doubao generates or that you upload are stored in an AI cloud drive. Outside mainland China the web app shows a region-restriction notice and asks you to log in, and points to Dola, a separate product. Doubao's user agreement says its output is for reference only and must not be used as professional advice or for commercial purposes.

Doubao's subscription statement on its App Store listing (China storefront) lists four tiers:

Paid tiers unlock more usage of AI features; Doubao's terms say usage is metered from token consumption and shown as a number of uses or minutes, and that the exact allowances are shown on the in-app product page, which is behind login. Separately, members can buy one-off creation quota packs for image and video generation (members only, fixed expiry, unused quota is forfeited), and anyone can buy extra cloud storage on monthly or yearly auto-renew. Prices for packs and storage are shown only at purchase. The desktop download page offers new users a 30-day free trial package. The terms say paid services are generally non-refundable once bought, except in legally required cases or serious service defects. Prices are in Chinese yuan; payment runs through the App Store or Doubao's own checkout in China.

Doubao suits people in mainland China who work mostly in Chinese and want one free app for questions, homework help, writing, office documents and quick image or video generation, and teams already on Feishu who want an agent that can work from their company context. The paid tiers make sense only if you hit the free quotas on work mode or generation; Doubao does not publish the quotas outside the app, so try the 30-day trial first.

It is not a practical choice outside China: the web app is region-restricted and the user agreement bars commercial use of output. For an English-first assistant, use ChatGPT. Within China, Qwen, Kimi and Zhipu's Z.ai are the closest alternatives.

Doubao's China App Store listing shows a 4.6 rating from about 5.24 million ratings and ranks it first in Productivity. The written reviews shown there are more critical than the score: recent ones complain that it ignores requests for short answers, repeats mistakes after being corrected and invents facts. AFP reported in June 2026 that Doubao has more than 300 million monthly active users and was the first major Chinese chatbot to charge, while DeepSeek, Qwen and Yuanbao stayed free; analysts quoted there said Chinese users are not yet used to paying for AI.
