TL;DR / Key Takeaways
- One 3:22 Sondo video cost $19.98 before tax: the $9.99 weekly plan plus a $9.99 credit pack.
- The video was quoted at 1,407 credits; the weekly plan gives 800.
- Export was 480x854 with the watermark on by default.
- Strong story from one sentence; loose likeness to the photo.
Verdict: Sondo is the most ambitious of the AI music video apps we tested: from one sentence it wrote a song, a storyboard and a three-minute video with a story. It is also the most expensive way to a first video in our test. Its $9.99 weekly plan did not cover the video it quoted, so one video cost $19.98 before tax, and the export was 480x854 with the SONDO watermark on. Tested on Google Play (US), October 16, 2026.
How we tested: on October 16, 2026 we installed each app from Google Play (US) on a Pixel 6 Pro and tried to make the same thing in each: a music video for the brief "a happy birthday song for my wife Anna", starring the same photo (an AI-generated portrait, not a real person). Apps that only animate a song you upload got the same finished track. We paid with our own money for Sondo, Yuna and Mozart. We did not buy a One More Shot video: we went through its free steps and recorded its prices. StarSinger's clip and full video were made the same day through the app's normal purchase flow; for StarSinger we report its listed one-time prices. Prices are what the apps showed us that day, before tax, and change often.
What Sondo is
Sondo (Google Play listing, App Store listing) is a song generator and music video maker. You can upload a song or have it write one from a description, then upload a photo of the "main character". It plans a storyboard and renders a multi-shot video. On October 16 its App Store rating was 4.09 (1,727 ratings) and its Google Play rating 3.46 (20.8k ratings, 1M+ installs).
The path to one video
- Sign-up wall. Typing the brief and tapping Sign Up and Try opened a Google or email sign-up.
- Subscription screen. Tapping Create on the song opened "Subscribe to start your creative journey": Weekly $9.99 (800 credits), Super Weekly $29.99 (4,000), Yearly $59.99 (8,000). We took the $9.99 weekly plan.
- Song. Sondo wrote the song from the brief ("Anna's Laugh on the Road", 3:22) and sang Anna's name.
- Photo and options. A consent screen said prompts and media may be sent to OpenAI, Google and Alibaba Cloud. Options were 9:16, Standard quality, Subtitles ON, Watermark ON.
- Storyboard, then the bill. Its "AI Agent" wrote a character sheet, cover, story and timed lyrics, then said: "this Music Video costs 1,407 credits". We had 780.
- Top-up. Another 800 credits for $9.99. The video then rendered in about 25 minutes.
What $19.98 bought
| Sondo result | |
|---|---|
| Length | 3:22 (the whole song) |
| Resolution | 480x854 |
| Watermark | SONDO mark, on by default |
| Lyrics on screen | Yes, burned-in subtitles |
| Likeness to the photo | Loose: restyled outfit, face drifts |
| Story | Road trip with a boyfriend character |
| Render time | About 25 minutes |
The story is the strength. Sondo built a road trip with a convertible, a motel and plastic flamingos, cut to the song. The weak points are technical: 480p looks soft on a modern phone, and the person in the video was a looser match for the photo than in Yuna or Mozart. It also cast a boyfriend opposite the singer in a birthday song written for a wife, which is the kind of thing you will want to check before you send it.
About the watermark: the toggle was ON when we reached the options screen, even though we were on a paid plan, and the subscription screen advertises "Music Video without watermark". So paying subscribers can probably switch it off; we left the defaults and our export carried it. Check that toggle before you spend credits.
Where Sondo wins and loses
- Wins: writes the song and the story from one sentence; full-length video; sang the name from the brief.
- Loses: most expensive first video in our test; weekly plan does not cover one video; 480x854; watermark on by default; weaker likeness than Yuna or Mozart; slowest render (about 25 minutes).
Reviewers say the same thing about price. In the most recent App Store reviews we collected, 43% of 1 and 2 star Sondo reviews mention credits or tokens and 34% the subscription. See Weekly subscription traps in AI music apps.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Sondo cost?
On Google Play US on October 16, 2026: Weekly $9.99 (800 credits), Super Weekly $29.99 (4,000), Yearly $59.99 (8,000), and credit packs of 800 for $9.99, 3,200 for $29.99 and 8,000 for $59.99. Our one full video was quoted at 1,407 credits, so it took the weekly plan plus one pack: $19.98 before tax.
Is Sondo free?
New accounts get a small credit bonus that covers a song, but a music video needs credits from a plan or pack. We could not make a video without paying.
Does Sondo add a watermark?
The Watermark option was ON by default in our test, on a paid plan, and our export carried the SONDO mark. The subscription lists watermark-free video, so check the toggle before generating.
Does Sondo look like the photo you upload?
Loosely. In our test it restyled the outfit and the face drifted between shots. Yuna and Mozart held the face closer to the same photo.
How long does Sondo take to make a video?
About 25 minutes for our 3:22 video, after a storyboard step of a few minutes.
