Short answer: for a remote interview podcast, Riverside is the strongest all-round pick: each guest is recorded locally, up to 4K video and 48 kHz audio on the Pro plan (about $24 to $29 a month on annual billing; Riverside's own pages disagree), with a 14-day free trial. Zencastr has the most generous free plan (unlimited separate tracks for up to 6 people). Descript is best if you edit by transcript. StreamYard is best if you also stream live. How we checked: plans, limits and trials come from each vendor's own pricing page and help center, read October 29, 2026. We did not record the same episode in every tool, so this guide does not judge audio quality. The cost-per-hour figures are our own arithmetic on the published plans. Where a vendor's own pages disagree, we say so.

What an hour of separate-track recording costs
Separate tracks (one file per speaker, recorded on each person's own device) are what make a remote podcast sound like a studio one, so that is the allowance to compare. Our calculation, on annual billing:
| Plan | Price per month | Separate-track hours a month | Cost per hour (our math) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zencastr Free | $0 | Unlimited | $0 |
| Riverside Pro | $24 to $29 | 15 hours of separate-track downloads | $1.60 to $1.93 |
| Riverside Grow | $34 to $39 | 20 hours, plus live streaming | $1.70 to $1.95 |
| Descript Hobbyist | $16 | 5 hours of remote recording | $3.20 |
| Descript Creator | $24 | 15 hours of remote recording | $1.60 |
| StreamYard Core | $35.99 | Unlimited local recording | Flat fee |
Riverside
Riverside records each participant on their own device; Riverside says this keeps a shaky connection from degrading the recorded files. Pro gives up to 4K video and 48 kHz audio with no watermark, unlimited transcription, Magic Clips and show notes, and 15 hours of separate-track downloads a month. Grow adds live streaming to unlimited destinations and 20 hours. Magic Audio and the AI Co-Creator do not use AI credits.
- Price, and a conflict: Riverside's pricing page lists Pro at $24 a month on annual billing ($29 monthly) and Grow at $34 ($39), but it carries a notice that it may not be up to date. A Riverside blog post updated in September 2026 says Pro is $29 a month on annual billing ($35 monthly) and Grow $39 ($45). Check the price at checkout.
- Free plan or trial: the pricing page still shows a free plan (a one-off 2 hours of separate-track recording, 720p, watermarked); the September blog post says the free plan was replaced by a 14-day free trial. Both agree on the 14-day trial for paid plans.
- Guests: Riverside's FAQ says up to 10 recorded participants (host plus 9 guests).
Zencastr
Zencastr's free plan is unusually generous: up to 6 participants, local recording up to 4K, 48 kHz WAV or 44.1 kHz MP3, unlimited separate tracks and transcription, and 1080p streaming. Its pricing page names a paid Producer tier without a price, so we cannot compare paid plans. For a new podcast on a zero budget, start here.
Descript
Descript is an editor first: you edit the episode by editing its transcript. Its Rooms record each person on their own device ("double-ended tracks"), with 2 hours on the free plan and 5, 15 or 25 hours a month on Hobbyist ($16), Creator ($24) and Business ($50) on annual billing. Studio Sound cleans up audio and AI Speech can patch a fluffed line in your cloned voice. Descript still runs SquadCast separately and says Rooms will eventually replace it, with no date set.
StreamYard
StreamYard is a live-streaming studio that also records. Paid plans start at $14.99 a month on annual billing, with a 7-day free trial. Local recording is 2 hours a month on Free, unlimited on Core ($35.99) and up to 4K on Advanced ($68.99). Up to 10 people can be on screen on Core. Pick it if the show goes out live to YouTube or LinkedIn and the recording is a by-product.

After recording: cleanup, show notes and clips
- Adobe Podcast Enhance Speech: free tier for rescuing poorly recorded audio; Premium adds 4 hours a day, 1 GB files and video. Adobe's plan page does not list the Premium price.
- Auphonic: automatic levelling, loudness targets, noise and reverb reduction and filler-word cutting for a finished episode, with 2 hours free each month.
- Castmagic: turns an episode into show notes, timestamps, clips and social posts; from $19 a month on annual billing (30 hours).
- Riverside and Descript both include transcription and short-clip tools, so check what your recorder already does before paying for another tool.
