Stork Quadrant

Sleeping Giant· 42/100

Has a real moat but invisible to agents. Add an MCP and you'd climb.

“The AI face scan and treatment suggestion are fully replaceable — I can do that in a chat window. What an LLM alone cannot do is write a legal prescription, dispense a compounded topical, or put a licensed provider on the hook for the outcome. The regulatory and coordination moat is real: telehealth prescribing requires state-by-state licensure, pharmacy partnerships, and liability rails that take years to build. This is a defensible wedge if they stay in the prescription-required lane.”

Defensibility · 60/100

  • Physical-world coupling
  • Regulatory moat
  • Network liquidity
  • Proprietary refreshing data
  • High-trust catastrophic workflows
  • Multi-party coordination
  • Brand / community / taste

An LLM alone could replace

  • Analyze a photo of skin and suggest likely conditions or ingredients to look for
  • Generate a skincare routine or treatment plan based on described symptoms
  • Explain what tretinoin, azelaic acid, or other topical actives do and how to combine them
  • Summarize dermatology guidelines for acne treatment tiers

Agent-Readiness · 20/100

  • Verified MCP
  • Listed on agent surfaces
  • Usage-based pricing
  • Headless agent auth

How to defend

Double down on the compounding pharmacy relationship and proprietary formulation catalog — that supply chain is hard to replicate. Expand the licensed provider network across all 50 states before a better-funded competitor does, and use longitudinal progress photos as proprietary outcome data to improve the AI triage model.

  • Ship an MCP server and list it on Stork — biggest single point gain (+25).
  • Get listed in the Anthropic MCP registry, Cursor, or Claude Desktop (+20).
  • Add a usage-based or per-call tier; per-seat-only pricing dies when agents replace seats (+15).
  • Expose API-key auth with a self-serve sandbox tier; remove sales-call gates (+15).

overview

What Nolla Health does

Nolla Health runs Nolla Derm, a skin-care app with prescriptions. You answer questions about your skin and take a face scan in the app; Nolla's software assesses the images and proposes a treatment plan, and the site says a licensed US medical provider reviews every diagnosis and prescription. Treatment is a custom topical formula, sent to your pharmacy or shipped to you, and the plan is adjusted as your progress scans change. Nolla lists acne, redness, rosacea, hyperpigmentation and dark spots, melasma, fine lines and wrinkles, and under-eye bags. It says it operates in all US states except Arkansas, Delaware, Kansas, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Mexico and West Virginia. A separate Health Assistant chat (beta) covers other symptoms, and a women's health product is marked coming soon.

In Utah, Nolla runs a 12-month pilot under an agreement with the state's Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy in which the AI itself issues initial and renewal prescriptions for adults 18+ with mild-to-moderate acne, from a restricted list of topicals (tretinoin, adapalene, clindamycin with benzoyl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid). Nolla says the first 100 patients' prescriptions are approved by two physicians before issue; up to 500 patients, the AI issues directly and a physician reviews every case afterward at least weekly; after that, physicians review a sample of at least 10% monthly plus every escalation or side effect. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, certain conditions and severe acne are routed to a physician or in-person care. Its terms say Nolla Health is a technology company, not a medical practice, and that care comes from independent physician-owned practices.

Nolla's site has no dedicated pricing page; prices come from its Derm and Utah pilot pages. The Utah FAQ says medication costs are separate from the subscription. The Derm FAQ does not say whether medication is included in the "from $9.99" plan. The iOS App Store listing shows a wider range of in-app purchases, including monthly treatment plans at $19.99 and $29.99, weekly plans from $3.99 to $9.99 and yearly plans from $59.99 to $79.99, without saying what separates them, so check the price in the app before you pay.

Prices checked on the vendor's pricing page on November 3, 2026 (Nolla has no separate pricing page; figures are from its Derm and Utah pilot pages). See Nolla Derm and Utah AI prescriptions.

best for

Who Nolla Health is best for

Nolla suits US adults with common, non-urgent skin concerns such as mild-to-moderate acne who want a prescription topical without waiting for a dermatology appointment, and who are comfortable with app-based care and photo check-ins. Nolla says most people see improvement within six to eight weeks.

It is not for urgent or serious problems. Nolla's terms say the service is not for emergencies (call 911), and its FAQ says the scan can miss things and that in-person care is needed for some conditions. A changing mole or any spot you are worried about needs an in-person dermatologist. If you want a long-established online prescription skin service, Curology and Musely offer clinician-prescribed custom formulas; for skin-spot risk checks rather than treatment, SkinVision is a different kind of tool.

what users say

What users say

On the App Store, Nolla Derm is rated 4.9 out of 5 from about 14,000 ratings at the time of checking; visible reviews praise fast access to a treatment plan and the check-in reminders, with a few noting that the medication stings at first. Coverage of the Utah pilot in Medical Economics and KSL reports the state's oversight plan and Nolla's own claim that clinicians agreed with its recommendations in over 96% of cases; that figure is the company's and no independent outcome data was found. Neither article carries criticism from outside physicians.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Nolla Derm cost?

Nolla's site says Nolla Derm starts at $9.99 a month. In the Utah AI pilot the subscription is $4.99 a month, with medication separate: $49.99 for compounded home-delivered treatments, or the retail price of a generic at a local pharmacy. The App Store lists other plan prices, so confirm in the app.

Is a real doctor involved with Nolla?

Nolla says a licensed US medical provider reviews every diagnosis and prescription, and you can message a licensed physician in the app. In the Utah pilot, after the first 100 patients, the AI issues acne prescriptions itself and physicians review afterward or by sample, under the state's oversight agreement.

How accurate is the Nolla skin scan?

Nolla says its scan is trained on a large number of clinical images and that doctors review it where treatment is involved. Its own FAQ adds that the scan is not perfect, can miss things, and is affected by lighting and camera quality. No independent accuracy data was found.

What can Nolla's AI prescribe in Utah?

Only topical acne medications from a restricted list: tretinoin, adapalene, clindamycin with benzoyl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide and azelaic acid, some combined with niacinamide or topical spironolactone. No oral or hormonal medicines and no isotretinoin.

Where is Nolla Health available?

Nolla says it operates in all US states except Arkansas, Delaware, Kansas, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Mexico and West Virginia. The AI prescribing pilot is for Utah residents 18 and older only.

Is Nolla Health HIPAA compliant?

Nolla displays a HIPAA Compliant badge and says it handles patient information in accordance with HIPAA and applicable privacy laws, never sells data, and shares it only as needed for care, with the state in de-identified form for the pilot, or with consent. Nolla makes no FDA claim on the pages checked.

Can Nolla replace a dermatologist?

Not for everything. Nolla says it handles many common conditions and will tell you when you need in-person care; severe or nodulocystic acne is sent to in-person dermatology. Its terms say it is not for emergencies.
