What VocalLab does
VocalLab turns a script into speech using a library of 260+ voices across 200+ languages, your own voice cloned from about 30 seconds of audio, or a new voice designed from a text description. Its main idea is voice steering: you write a direction in brackets at the start of a line, such as [say excitedly, like sharing big news] or [whisper very softly], and add sound tags like [laugh], [sigh], [breathe] or [clear throat]. A delivery setting runs from Stable to Creative. Output downloads as MP3 (WAV on Pro and up) with word-timed SRT captions.
The same studio has an audiobook editor that reads an ebook with a cast of voices, a podcast mode that writes and voices a two-host episode from a topic, video dubbing that re-voices a video in another language, and speech to text for transcripts. Developers can call it through an API or use it from Claude and other assistants through an MCP server. VocalLab does not say which underlying speech models it uses; it calls its own engine the steerable VocalLab Studio model.
