overview
What is NewsMCP?
NewsMCP is a specialized AI news aggregation tool developed by NewsCatcher that enables AI agents to access structured, deduplicated news events. It operates on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard designed for AI assistants to connect with external data sources, optimizing for token efficiency within an agent's context window by providing events rather than raw article links.
NewsMCP offers five distinct read-only tools for AI agents: news for searching synthesized story events with filters, get_story for expanding a single story into a summary with classifications and source links, check_coverage to assess reporting independence, check_limits to report current usage quotas, and check_health to confirm API reachability. Its primary use cases include providing real-time world news to AI agents, deduplicating news stories by clustering multiple sources into a single event, classifying news by topic and geography, and enabling AI agents to reason over events rather than raw headlines. The platform is distinct from NewsCatcher's broader News API, which is designed for production workflows requiring full article text and extensive archives.
