Idlen.io Review

Idlen sells ad space in the seconds people spend waiting for an AI answer. It has three sides. AI users install the Idlen extension for VS Code (it also runs in Cursor and Windsurf, via the VS Code Marketplace or Open VSX), Chrome or Firefox; while ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Lovable, Bolt, v0, Replit or an editor assistant is generating, a small sponsored card appears and disappears when the answer arrives, and the user earns a share of the ad revenue. App builders add ads to their own AI chat with the @idlen/chat-sdk npm package (React, Vue and AI SDK support). Advertisers buy the placements self-serve.

For targeting in the editor, Idlen says it reads your package.json locally to infer your stack and sends only sanitized tags such as react or typescript with the ad request, never your code or prompts. Users can pause earnings, block ad categories and delete their data. Advertisers can target by AI tool, prompt context, editor stack, segment and country.

Idlen is free to install. Money flows from advertisers to the people and apps that show the ads.

Idlen's own earnings estimates for extension users are 0.02 to 0.05 euros per ad view, or about 15 to 25 euros a month for 2 to 3 hours of AI use a day; treat these as vendor projections. At the 70% share, a $35 CPM format pays an app builder about $24.50 per 1,000 impressions ($35 x 0.70), before fill rate. Converting earnings into OpenAI or Anthropic API credits with a 10% bonus is listed as coming soon on the payouts page.

For developers who spend hours a day waiting on AI assistants and are comfortable seeing a sponsored card in their editor or browser in exchange for a small payout. For indie AI app builders, the chat SDK is a quick way to test ad revenue without a sales process. For dev-tool advertisers, it is a cheap, self-serve way to reach people in Cursor, VS Code and AI chats, with a 10 euro minimum.

If you do not want ads in your work tools, skip it; the expected earnings are small. Similar wait-state networks include Kickbacks.ai, which replaces coding-agent spinners with ads, and IdleAds for terminal agents like Claude Code. Advertisers wanting established developer audiences can compare EthicalAds or Carbon Ads, which place ads on documentation and developer sites instead.

There is little independent review coverage yet. On the Chrome Web Store the extension showed about 4,000 users and a 2.6 out of 5 average from 5 ratings on November 2, 2026, too few to read much into. The Firefox add-on had a single 5-star rating, and the Open VSX listing about 8,200 downloads. The performance numbers Idlen publishes, such as CTRs of 1.5% to 3.2% per format, are its own figures. Before installing, weigh the vendor's privacy description (local dependency analysis, no code sent) against your employer's policy on extensions in work tools.
