Lichess

Chess.comOn Stork

Largest online chess community with extensive learning resources, including lessons, videos, and a highly-rated puzzle trainer.

While Chess.com offers a free tier, many advanced features like unlimited puzzles, game analysis, and lessons are behind a paywall, unlike Lichess which provides all its features completely free.

Chess24↗

Strong focus on chess news, live commentary of top tournaments, and high-quality video series from grandmasters.

Chess24 provides a free tier but restricts full access to its extensive video library, analysis tools, and premium content to paying subscribers, whereas Lichess offers all its features without any paywalls.

Free Internet Chess Server (FICS)↗

One of the oldest free online chess servers, known for its strong, dedicated community and plain, functional interface, often accessed via dedicated chess GUIs.

FICS is completely free but has a more dated interface and often requires a separate client or a less polished web interface compared to Lichess's modern, browser-native experience. It also lacks the integrated learning resources and advanced puzzle types of Lichess.

ChessTempo↗

Highly regarded for its advanced tactics trainer, endgame trainer, and opening training tools, which adapt to the user's skill level.

ChessTempo offers excellent training tools, but many of its advanced features, especially for unlimited tactics and endgame training, require a premium subscription, unlike Lichess which provides similar training features for free. The playing interface is also less modern than Lichess.
